Slovenia is
among the most successful and affluent countries of central and
eastern Europe. Countries of this region are in transition from
socialist to market economies. Since independence in 1991 Slovenia
has redirected its market to Western Europe. It has successfully
introduced a host of fiscal reforms and economic policies which
all contribute to requirements for accession to the European Union.
The country has sound economic management and policies and since
2000 is rated on the level of the Western European countries. Slovenia's
major export partners are: Germany 28%, Italy 14%, Croatia 9%, France
8%, Austria 7% (1998), and the commodities of exports are: manufactured
goods 45%, machinery and transport equipment 30%, chemicals 10%,
food 3% (1997). The composition of the GDP is: agriculture 6%, industry
35%, services 60% (mainly financial services). A fast growing sector
is tourism: majority of visitors are from Austria, Germany, Italy.
Major areas of attention are privatisation; in banking, telecommunication
and public utility sectors and capital market reform. Slovenia has
a long term strategy until 2006 for the labour market and employment
levels and policies are in line with the rest of Europe. For competitiveness
Slovenian firms have modernised and specialise in mid- to high tech
