Karst Caves of Slovenia

The Slovene Karst is the
most famous cave area in the world. This term is taken from the name of the
Slovenian region, Kras. Slovenia is a country of caves, 7,500 karst caves are
registered. Among the most famous caves
of Slovenia and tourist attractions are Postojna cave, and Skocjan caves. These
caves have been explored during the last two centuries and are important in the
field of study of caves, speleology. Slovenian words have been adopted
internationally in the study of caves: jama, dolina, polje, and ponor. Karst is the international
term used to describe distinctive landforms that develop on rock types, which
are readily dissolved in water. The Karst region of Slovenia covers 44% of the
whole territory of Slovenia; over two-thirds consists of limestone. Other Karst
areas in Slovenia are on dolomite, conglomerate, calcarenite, and breccia. There
are other famous Karst phenomena, intermittent lakes; such as the well-known
Cerknica Lake, and rivers which disappear underground, and resurface. This is
the reason the river Ljubljanica has seven names. The topic Web resources
