Outline
Ljubljana,
the capital of the Republic of Slovenia, is a vibrant European city.
It is the political, cultural and commercial centre of the country.
The city is strategically important in European trade and politics,
located geographically at the intersection of the traffic routes
from northern Europe to Italy and the Adriatic Sea, and from western
Europe to the Balkans and the East. It has a long history. There
were village settlements, since the Copper Age (2,300-1,800BC) in
the marshes of Ljubljana. It was the important Roman town Emona
around 50AD. By the fifteen century Ljubljana became one of the
most important economic and commercial centres on Hapsburg territory,
ruled by the Hapsburg monarchy, from 1335 until 1914 and was ranked
among the middle-sized towns of Europe. Its cultural life was already
then in tune with contemporary European trends in the arts, education
and science. After 1918, Slovenia gained independence. and was free
then to establish cultural and educational bodies. Thus were founded
the National Gallery in 1918, and the University of Ljubljana in
1919. Today Ljubljana has a population of 330,000 and has a high
quality cultural life, with a wealth of wide-ranging artistic and
entertainment events throughout the year. The Cankarjev Dom Cultural
and Congress Centre alone hosts annually around 1000 cultural events.
The city has a beautiful and relaxed ambience; a legacy from the
foresight and vision of a train of urban planners, architects and
community leaders. It is a fine baroque city, with integrated modern
buildings and spaces designed by Joze Plecnik. The topic Web resources
give information on the daily events on cultural, social and commercial
activity and the abundant attractions of the city.
