Bled, located in the north-west region
Gorenjska, is Slovenia’s most popular resort. It is reknown for its strikingly
beautiful emerald-green lake and its tiny island, Blejski otok, with its church
of the nineth century, Church of the Assumption. Bled is an ancient settlement,
from the period 800-650BC. Bled has been the subject of myths and legends,
particularly of the Slavic goddess Ziva and her priestess Bogomila. According to
a legend the temple Živa, once stood in the place of the current Baroque
church. Excavations of the church site reveal an ancient pre-Christian ritual
burial ground. France Preseren referrred to the goddess in his famous epic poem
Krst pri Savici (Baptism at the Savica Waterfall) in 1836. The area draws visitors from all over
the world because of wonderful scenery, and the many attractions. It lies in the
basin at the eastern foot of the Julian Alps, and the Karavanke Alps. Bled is a
highly developed tourist centre, offering many recreational activities:
horse-riding, swimming, tennis, golf, flying, and skiing. The area around Bled
offers many excursions with well-marked hiking paths.It also has a major
conference and congress centre, and an international school of management.
