Conjunctions

Slovene distinguishes two main types of conjunctions: subordinate and coordinate.

Coordinate conjunctions express:

  • supplement: in, pa, ter - "and"
  • opposition: pa, toda, vendar, a, ali - "but, however"
  • choice: ali-ali, ali, bodisi - "either or, or"
  • degree: ne samo(le) - ampak (temvecc) tudi - "not only - but also"
    ne - ne, niti - niti - "neither - nor"
  • cause: kajti, zakaj, saj, sicer, namrecc - "because"
  • consequence: zato, torej, pa - "then"

    Subordinate conjunctions express:
  • da: almost all types of subordinate relations
  • cce, ako, ko: conditionality, cce also interrogative (ko only with the conditional),
  • ker: cause
  • ko, kadar: temporality
  • cceprav, dasi: concessiveness
  • ko, kakor, kot: comparison (exceptionally also supplement)
  • ki, kateri, kdor, kar, ccigar: introduce relative clauses
