Andrew Potocnik: Chopsticks Box

Technique: a box made to appear like a section of bamboo houses chopsticks that rest on delicate supports. Each chopstick is made of Red Gum tipped with white coloured Rock Maple

Andrew Potocnik: Spirit Vessel III

Measurements: 380 mm long, 220 mm wide, 90 mm high
Technique: turned as a long torpedo-like shape, this piece was cut down its length, resulting in two vessel pieces. The inner parts were carved out and a pair of outriggers attached. The central section of the vessel was hollowed out and a cap fitted to create a container, an area to house the 'spirit'.
The third in the series of pieces that draw connections to ancient cultures where a vessel was used to symbolically transport one’s soul from one world to the next

Technique: intended to defy conventions I set out to create a more interesting shape that would entice the user to look at the form, not just use it. Sweeping curves and metal help present a different interpretation of this simple utensil

Andrew Potocnik: Group of Surya Boxes

"Group of Surya Boxes"

Measurements: 200mm diameter, 65 mm high
Technique: Texturing was applied to three of these boxes to reveal the timber’s inner character. Wire brushing removed soft parts of the material, leaving harder sections raised from the surface. The plant’s structure reveals its growth and development of interesting natural patterns.

Technique: made from the base section of the hardy desert plant, the radiating ‘rays’ come from a date palm. Surya is a sun motif found in Nepal

Technique: hollowed through a tiny opening of less than 7 mm, walls thinned to under 2 mm thickness. Difficult to make, they are a tactile delight to explore in the palm of one’s hand.

Technique: inspired by forms seen in hats worn by emperors of the Ming Dynasty these boxes are turned on three separate axes. This creates three facets on the outer surfaces of the boxes.
