Landmarks

Slovenia is traditionally comprised of eight main regions: Gorenjska, Primorska, Notranjska, Dolenjska, Bela Krajina, Štajerska, Prekmurje, and Koroška, and the capital city, Ljubljana. There is a great variety and heterogeneity of lifestyles and culture. The regions differ in climate, dialects, architecture, agricultural produce, nutrition and cuisine, arts and crafts, tradition, and local custom.

Slovenian Landmarks offer a collection of articles and albums on Slovenian traditional building styles, which give distinct character to its landscape. The series is intended to present a regionally distinct farm houses and farm outbuildings that reflect a diversity of styles and building materials characteristic of the geographically diverse regions of Slovenia - the alpine, pannonian, karstic and mediterranean. They are farmhouses built of a variety of materials, some still displaying the traditional “black kitchen” and traditional farming implements, with storehouses, stables, barns, bee houses and uniquely Slovenian vernacular structures - hayracks in the form of kozolec or toplar.

The homesteads mostly consist of the main residence and several outbuildings dedicated to a variety of purposes. Commonly several centuries old, they are now set up as ethnographic museums and opened to the public. Some homesteads include a cultural historical dimension, as birthplaces of Slovenian writers and poets.
