Conjunctions

Slovene distinguishes two main types of conjunctions: subordinate and coordinate.


Coordinate conjunctions express:

  • supplement: in, pa, ter - "and"
  • opposition: pa, toda, vendar, a, ali - "but, however"
  • choice: ali-ali, ali, bodisi - "either or, or"
  • degree: ne samo(le) - ampak (temveč) tudi - "not only - but also" , ne - ne, niti - niti - "neither - nor"    
  • cause: kajti, zakaj, saj, sicer, namreč - "because"
  • consequence: zato, torej, pa - "then"


    • Subordinate conjunctions express:

  • da: almost all types of subordinate relations
  • če, ako, ko: conditionality, če also interrogative (ko only with the conditional),
  • ker: cause
  • ko, kadar: temporality
  • čeprav, dasi: concessiveness
  • ko, kakor, kot: comparison (exceptionally also supplement)
  • ki, kateri, kdor, kar, čigar: introduce relative clauses

      1 + 1 = 2 (ena in/plus ena je dva)
      2 : 1 = 2 (dva deljeno z ena je dva)
      2 . 2 = 4 (dva krat dva je štiri)
      2 - 1 = 1 (dva manj-minus ena je ena)
